In the project for which the deed was acquired 1.5 months ago, the high-technology facility—where approximately 200 people will be employed—is expected to be completed within two years.

MUSTAFA KEMAL ÇOLAK

Sagun Group, the export leader in the fish, marine, and seafood industry, has begun working on a new factory investment in Bafra, Samsun. The facility, which will be established on a 30,000-square-meter area in the Bafra Organized Industrial Zone (OSB), will focus on fish processing, value-added packaged semi-finished products, and ready-to-eat products.
The new facility, to be built on the land whose title deed was obtained 1.5 months ago in Bafra OSB, will utilize next-generation technology with a focus on Black Sea salmon.

Sagun Group Vice Chairman of the Board, Oğulcan Kemal Sagun, said:
“Our investment will produce value-added products not only for the domestic market but also for our export markets. It will include smoking, sushi-cut processing, and advanced processing. As a group, we have the capability to build our own machinery park. We will utilize the strength of the local machinery industry as well as our own expertise for our production.”
The Sagun leadership, which has initiated the project design process for the facility—planned to employ approximately 200 people, mostly women, with a total annual capacity estimated at 9–10 thousand tons—plans to complete the factory within two years.

With four exporting companies and a total of eight companies under its umbrella, Sagun Group operates processing facilities across various regions of Turkey. Owned by the Sagun Family, the group is among the leading organizations in the marine and seafood industry.
Having contributed to the development of the sector through export activities that began in the 1970s, the group pioneered Black Sea salmon and tuna exports. With Marines Gıda—now entering its 20th year—the group also maintains its leadership in the domestic market.
Through Marines Gıda, the company supplies more than 3,000 product varieties to end consumers, supermarkets, and out-of-home channels such as restaurants and tourism establishments.

A STANDARD FOR TURKISH SALMON MUST BE ESTABLISHED

Oğulcan Kemal Sagun, who also serves as the Vice Chairman of the Board of the Istanbul Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters’ Association, stated that the sector has made significant progress in global markets, saying:
“We are second in Europe. The first is Norway, with 8 billion dollars in exports. We are second, with 2 billion dollars. With the 2 billion dollars of exports achieved in 2024, we have crossed an important threshold, but there are things we must do to maintain this momentum.”
He gave the following response to our question about what needs to be done:

▶ VALUE-ADDED PRODUCTS: This is Norway’s greatest advantage. They export with strong branding. As a sector, we also need to focus more on developing value-added products and selling under branded labels.

▶ STANDARDIZATION IS ESSENTIAL: We have made rapid progress in Black Sea salmon in a short period of time worldwide. We can go even further. However, in our sector, it is essential that we establish a standard for our product. What do I mean by this? Buyers, when purchasing from Turkey, want all fish to be female, they require that there be no blood, and they expect the fish not to be in the spawning phase. As a sector, we need to create this standard and apply it both to the domestic market and to exports.

▶ WE MUST ALSO SELL FRESH TO CHINA: The markets that will grow are primarily China and the broader Asian region. We are increasing our participation in trade fairs and focusing heavily on China. The potential for Turkish salmon in this country is enormous. We currently export frozen products to China, but we must also be able to sell fresh products. We are awaiting leadership from our Ministry of Agriculture. The two countries need to intensify their negotiations — as a sector, we are ready.

▶ RUSSIA IS A KEY MARKET: Russia ranks first in our sector’s exports. It is a 500-million-dollar market. It also holds a very special place in our largest export category, salmon. Every year, we prepare for the Russian market with special attention and high-level service practices.

Amphoras recovered from the nets are recorded by the Ministry of Culture.

Within the headquarters building of the Sagun Group—located in İstanbul Sancaktepe, where Turkey’s first private fish market is also situated—there is a museum in operation. The museum, authorized by the Ministry of Culture and located right at the entrance of the headquarters, houses 314 amphora pieces recovered after being caught in fishing nets.

■ TWO MORE SHIPS ARE BEING ADDED TO THE FLEET

Noting that they are close to completing the construction of two fishing vessels at the shipyards in Bandırma, Oğulcan Kemal Sagun said:
“Two of our ships are currently at the shipyard and will join our fleet in May. This will bring the number of vessels carrying our own flag to eight.”
Sagun, who emphasized that the tuna trade is managed through quotas, continued:
*”We are expanding in international waters in this field in order to increase our quotas. We have a tuna farm in Tunisia and two farms in Turkey. In this area, Turkey is far ahead. We also continue our traditional lines of work such as frogs and snails, inherited from our grandfather. They hold a small share within all our operations, but we regard them as highly valuable because they reflect our company identity, culture, and roots.

Sagun Group, a leading company in the fish, marine, and seafood industry, has taken action to establish an advanced processing facility on a 30,000-square-meter area in the Bafra Organized Industrial Zone (OSB).
